We believe the church experience is most rewarding to those who contribute their time, energy and talents to God in service. We bear a responsibility to our church and to our community to use our talents and energy to invigorate others with Christ’s love.

Bible Study Summary September 19, 2009

Greg F. led this week's bible study. The topic was 2 Peter 1:1-11. Greg showed us how these verses, starting with verse 5 create a ladder leading us to a place from which we will never fall (verse 10). Starting with Faith we add Virtue, then Knowledge, Temperence, and Patience, followed by Godliness, Brotherly Kindness, and, finally, Charity (or love).

We briefly discussed each of these traits and looked at how each of them is required in the Christian walk. We also realized that each of these traits continue to grow and are not static qualities that a person either has or does not have.

Please feel free to leave comments with any thoughts, comments, ideas, or questions.

Bible Study Summary July 18, 2009

This week William led a bible study describing a link between the commandments to "Honor thy father and they mother" and to "remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy." He touched on the responsibility of parents to instruct their children in the way of the Lord. Please post your thoughts and reflections on this topic. Some questions for thought include:
What does it mean to "honor" your father and mother?
How can we effectively use the Sabbath to instruct our children (and the children of the church)?
In what ways in the relationship between a parent and a child unique? And what can we learn from this relationship?

Colossians 2:17-17

I have been studying the Sabbath in the New and Old Testament the last few days and came across these verses from Col 2:16-17:

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Based on these verses, I have heard other Christians say that the Sabbath is no longer relevant since "the substance is now of Christ". Wondering what you think about these verses in the context of the Sabbath, but also in terms of food and drink.

6/7/08 - Sermon on the Mount

In Matthew 5:34, Jesus says, "Swear not at all." How do we apply this in everyday life? If we were called to testify in court, should we swear to tell the truth?

5/10/08 - Study on Miracles

Luke 11:29-30
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.

Is this passage saying that we should not ask God for signs? How do we reconcile this passage with the story of Gideon found in Judges 6?
